Blog 24: Last Presentation Reflection

(1) Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your block presentation and/or your senior project? Why?

I definitely am proud of my lack of nervousness,  I really felt engaged with audience and I received nothing but positive feedback back  from them. I clearly knew all of my work and I had numerous examples of mentorship to talk about.

I would give myself anow AE or a P+ based on the feedback from the audience is taught the class very well. As for contract wise: I had one full hour of talk time, my activity was clear and explained my answer 1 which was fingerprints. My activity showed how simple the process of fingerprint analysis is. I dressed professionally, engaged the crowd, clear voice, displayed my EQ on each table, and mentioned my sources and mentorship on a variety of times. I completed everything on the contract  and went above and beyond by turning the classroom into a crime scene.
b.     What assessment would you give yourself on your overall senior project? Use the component contract to defend that assessment.

For senior project overall I would say I deserve a P. I met all the requirements.
(3) What worked for you in your senior project?

I'd say what worked truly well for me in senior project was my mentorship experience. Having Tony Nyguen who has been a CSI for 17 years now and who was just an all around awesome character really impacted the me during senior project in a positive way.
(4) (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your senior project?
I would let Ortega know I had vertigo and would have to turn in my lesson plan a day late as I would be unable to attend school the day it is due.

Unfortunately that still probably would not be a solution as vertigo occurs randomly without any precautionary signs.
(5) Finding Value

How has the senior project been helpful to you in your future endeavors?   Be specific and use examples.
I definitely feel more confident in my ability to present to a large crowd for extended periods of time. As for how senior project has affected my life...well when I first started senior year I had no direction in where I wanted to go in life, but after spending a year mentoring in forensics I truly see my so doing this for a living. I would like to thank the senior team for giving me an interesting and life changing project. Hopefully I don't see any of you while I'm on the job.

Fingerprints, Blood Spatter, DNA Analysis.
Fingerprints because it is unique to a certain individual and can not be duplicated or shared with another human being.
(2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?
Basically after working with fingerprints for months i saw how cost effective and efficient it was to analyse.
(3) What problems did you face?  How did you resolve them?
I did not face any problems with finding my answers.

Independent Component 2

I recreated a crime scene just as blood spatter experts do to see how the the scene took place. I replicated blood spatter from real gun shot spatter cases and I conducted an analysis on the spatter. I then used blood spatter to create a dramatic effect as would happen on t.v. shows.
(e) Defend your work and explain the component's significance and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.   Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.   

My work shows the realistic process of how blood spatter is analysed at a crime scene and how blood spatter is used for dramatic purposes on television. My work shows the contrast between the CSI effect.

This component helped me answer my EQ by showing me that blood spatter is more a source to figure out what essentially happened at the crime scene not as a piece of evidence to secure a suspect.

Blog 21 - Interview 4 Reflection

1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?  
I learned that while in court the role of a CSI is strictly to present evidence to the jury. They give facts not a story. A CSI only speaks when spoken to. I also learned just how much the CSI effect can have a negative influence on a jury.

2.  How will what I learned affect my final lesson?
It taught me that I don't need to add in the dramatics, just keep the facts.

Fourth Interview Questions

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  What is this person's area of expertise?
I plan to interview my mentor Tony Nyguen. Mr. Nyguen has been a CSI for 17 years and works at Pomona P.D. Forensics department.


2.  Post 20 open-ended questions you want to ask an expert in the field concerning your senior project. Your focus should be finding answers to your EQ.


  1. Do you have any additional information since the last time we spoke?
  2. What is the role of a CSI in a court room?
  3. Do you have to convince the jury that the suspect is guilty or do you just present your evidence?

DNA is the best source of evidence to convince a jury of guilt beyond reasonable doubt because, the chances of 2 individuals having the exact same DNA are almost nonexistent and DNA evidence is veryaccurate at placing suspects at a scene.

1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?  
The most important thing I learned from this interview is how important it is to know the instructor and outs of your case.2.  How has your approach to interviewing changed over the course of your senior project?
I would say I have definitely been more direct in my current interviews now, opposed to my first interview.

Blog 16: Independent Component 2 Approval

Please review the component contract in the senior project packet.   The Independent Component 2 is an opportunity for you to add a dimension of creativity and/or an additional outlet for research.  The goal of the component is for you to explore your answers in more depth.  On Friday, April 22, 2014, you will be turning in the following to your blog to prove completion of this component:
  • Blog post answering specific questions posted by senior team
  • Log of hours clearly delineated as Independent Component 2 on the senior project hours spreadsheet (with total number of hours included)
  • Evidence of the 30 hours of work (e.g. transcript, essays, tests, art work, photographs) as digital artifacts   
For this blog post and approval, please answer the following questions.

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
I will be creating a mock crime scene of a domestic stabbing and suicide. This mock case will display how blood spatter is used to solve criminal cases. I will be working with Omar Orsornio, who will be photographing the process. Omar will also work to show how certain images can tell a story and emotionally influence an audience, a jury in this case. Blood spatter and photography are both used to tell stories.


2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
To display our 30 hours of work Omar Orsornio and I will provide photographs of the building of the crime scene and setting up equipment. We will also provide photographs of the actual processing of blood spatter and the stringing method.

3.  Explain how this component will help you explore your topic in more depth.
It will help to display how blood spatter can be used as evidence to convince a jury of guilt. 


4.  Post a log in your Senior Project Hours link and label it "Independent Component 2" log.

Your answers to the questions should be supported with details and examples for the senior team to understand what you plan to do.   Once we review your Blog Post 16, your house teacher will discuss with you the approval of your plan.  If it is approved, please start working on it.  If it is not approved, your house teacher will explain why.  It is your job to address the concerns so you can get your component approved.  Additionally, any changes requested must be addressed to your house teacher well in advance of the completion date for full credit on the assignment.

Lesson 2 Reflect

1.What are you most proud of in your Lesson 2 Presentation and why?
I would say I am most proud of my activity. I feel it really displayed how effective and simple fingerprints can be in identifying a suspect. My activity was very engaging with the audience and I received plenty of positive feedback.

I met all the requirements on the rubric.

My activity did very well and my content was good too.

I would Have made my power point more aesthetically pleasing, as well as not read off the board as much.

Blog 13: 10 Hour Mentorship Check-In

1.   Where are you doing your mentorship?
I am mentoring with the forensic unit at the Pomona police station.


2.   Who is your contact?  What makes this person an expert?

My mentor is Tony Nyguen, he is a 17 year long CSI.


3.   How many  hours have you done during the school year? (Summer Mentorship Hours and Mentorship Hours should be reflected separately in your Senior Project Hours log located on the right hand side of your blog).

I currently have 60 hours from mentorship (this includes my summer hours).

4.   Succinctly summarize what you did, how well you and your mentor worked together, and how you plan to complete the remaining hours.

So far I have managed to learn how to analyse fingerprints as well as locate and preserve them. I have also learned how to search and process evidence and a crime scene. Me and my mentor get along quite well. I plan to finish my hours at the same station learning about bloood spatter and DNA anaylysis. 



*You need 50 hours plus the original 10 in the summer by May.   The original 10 from the summer do not count toward the 50.  By the end of the year, you will have 60 hours counting that original 10.


Blog 12: Holiday Project Update

1.  It is important to consistently work on your senior project, whether it is break or we are in school.  What did you do over the break with your senior project?
Over the break I had went to my mentorship with Samantha Villanueva, where we performed our mock crime scene. Here we displayed our skills we gathered over our time at mentorship. 

2.  What was the most important thing you learned from what you did, and why?  What was the source of what you learned?
I learned from my mentor, who had taught me how to analyse and sketch a crime scene.
3.  Your third interview will be a 10 question interview related to possible answers for your EQ. Who do you plan to talk to and why?
I plan to talk to my mentor Tony Nyguen. The reason being he is very knowledgible in forensics and if he is aware of my essential question he will be able to help me develop a lesson plan.
